Destination: Belarus!
Featured country of the week
Many people consider Belarus, Russia's
forgotten brother, but in many ways the Belarusians are more true to their roots
than the Russians, both of whom share a past in many ways. Historically the Belarusians
were rural people, who were, for most of their history ruled over by foreign powers.
This past made the people realists who didn't seek power, but only attempted
to preserve their way of life and support their families.
Since the Soviet Union took over Belarus, the country
has changed dramatically as aspects of Russian culture
were forced on them and even today most Belarusians prefer the Russian language
over Belarusian. Additionally, the people have become more urbanized and still accept
a strong leader in their current government. However, traditional Belarusian attitudes
remain as the people continue to focus on their families and daily lives over politics
and power as most of the population remains rural.
