Hungary's Personality
Hungary is an island where the oceans meet, yet has somehow
managed to maintain themselves despite bits of their land falling into the surrounding
oceans. Around them are the Germanic peoples, the Slavs, and the
Romanians, whereas the Hungarians (or Magyars) are Asiatic in origin.
Throughout history the Magyars have become more and more a member of the
European community, for example, attaching with the Austrians
and today being a member of the European Union (EU). This has not taken away from
being Hungarian though and the people have successfully
kept aspects of their culture alive.
Identity
Hungarians identify as Magyars and, if mistakenly called
a Hungarian by a visitor, will quietly and politely correct you in an educational
way in order to share more about themselves and their culture. Being called Hungarian
doesn't offend them, but the people seem very in touch with both the present
and the past and this past is deeply rooted in Asia as Magyar
people.
