Culture & Identity
United Kingdom's Personality
The United Kingdom is a world power, both past
and present. Despite occasional internal conflicts between the English, Welsh, Scots,
and Irish, the country has maintained power and respect abroad, greatly contributing
to English being the de-facto international language.
The country's modern-day power comes from respect, economic power, past colonies,
diplomatic success, and internal strength. The English
subdued parts of Africa, Asia,
North America, and Australia, but could not even
control the people of the isles. This is a testament to both English strength as
well as Welsh, Scottish, and Irish character and resolve.
Identity
Most people in the United Kingdom identify as
English, Welsh, Scottish, or Irish. The latter three are almost wholly defined by
ethnicity, but many Irish first identify by religion, either Protestant or Catholic.
English is defined very differently; although most English are ethnically English,
second generation immigrants often identify as being English as well. This has created
a changing identity, whose definition is more based upon being a citizen of the
nation rather than a wholly ethnic definition.
