Dress
The traditional dress in Hungary is very simple and basic clothing. For women, this
traditional dress was a simple dress, often times in white, which was quite loose-fitting
with long sleeves. Many women also wore an apron over this dress, which tended to
add some color; embroidery, both on the apron as well as on the dress itself was
the most common form of decoration. For men the dress generally consisted of simple
white shirts, long, wide-legged pants, and a vest, which again was generally colorful.
Today the traditional dress of Hungary is all but lost as the only people who wear
it tend to do so for performances or special occasions. Nearly every Hungarian today
wears modern western-styled clothing which varies greatly based upon individual
preference. As a visitor to Hungary you are free to wear nearly any western-styled
clothing, but try to dress for the weather and the occasion. Obviously some settings
require more formal or conservative clothing, but if just wandering around the city
as a tourist most clothing is fine, but try to refrain from anything too revealing
(although in the baths many locals go naked, even though this is technically not
allowed).
