Bytom

Bytom train station
July 4, 2005
Once I landed in “Katowice,” I realized I wasn’t anywhere near Katowice so had to
take a bus to Bytom, little did I know that the ride was over an hour long. The
driver didn’t charge me and I tried to relax and see the country side.
During the entire journey I couldn’t help but dwell on the racism that exists in
this world. I guess you just never notice these things until you are on the receiving
end of the racism. Racism it seems is more than outright hatred, or even conscious
hatred, it is as little as treating someone different based upon their color, religion,
nationality, or any other identifying feature or trait. Most racism is unconsciously
acting different due to something each of us envisions as being different from ourselves.
We identify by traits such as language, religion, color, or nationality, instead
of first uniting by our commonalities.
After the ride I arrived in Bytom, bought a ticket to Katowice and enjoyed the graffiti-covered
train station that made Warsaw and Katowice stations look rather nice.
