Lublin

Gate in Lublin
December 17, 2004
The trolleybus ride in town was odd, there were no tickets, but only a woman and
the bus driver collecting money as you entered. In Krakow you must buy a ticket
prior to boarding, then validate the ticket upon entry.
We stayed at a convent... it was the cheapest place we could find, but there was
a 10:00pm curfew. We got in late afternoon, so quickly checked in, ate and headed
into town, only to quickly turn around to make curfew.
The next day we saw Lublin, which seems like a sleepy town trying to grow and improve
their technology, income, and city, however being dragged down by the movement of
the youth to bigger cities for an university education. The city's old town consists
of narrow streets and hills, a few guard towers and a castle with an incredible
chapel. The rest of the city simply looks like a communist city, but the old town
is splendid.
The city's highlight is Majdanek, a death camp, much like Auschwitz, however
opened later and closed earlier.
